While many areas in Korea offers cultural and heritage destinations, Gyeongsan is the place to go if you wish to immerse yourself in UNESCO sites and Korean history.

From the times of the Silla Kingdom (57BC -935AD) to the more recent aftermath of WWII, Gyeongsan region offers traces of Korea's heritage, culture and growth.

What I do appreciate is how cities, such as Busan can develop itself into a modern city, without destroying these traces.  How was it that they can keep pockets of villages, such as Gamcheon Cultural Village, 40 step cultural village in Busan into a tourist attraction without destroying the facade and its rustic charms?  Busan has in fact, so much to offer, I have created an extra Album just for Busan.

Cities, such as Gyeongju is wonderful place to go if you are looking for UNESCO sites in an quiet yet accessbible town. Tongyeong, at the south coasts captured and retained the aura of the glorious years where the Admiral Yi Sun shin developed his legacy as a military genius and saved Korea from the invasion of Japanese armies.

Give yourself about 2 week to cover these destinations in sufficiently.  I have been to Korea 4 times, and each time, Gyeongsan is always part of  my itinerary.  There is always just so much to experience.

Suggested Itinerary for Gyeongsan Region

Incheon to Gyeongju

  • Take the KTX from Incheon Airport to Singyeongju KTX station at Gyeongju. Frequency is approximately 2 hourly departing at 6:55am, 9:10am, 12:07pm, 16:30pm, 20:38pm; Duration is about 3 hours;  Cost is 61600 won for adults, child at approximately half the price. (Information correct at August 2017).  Note that Singyeongju Station is NOT near the city area, so you need to take a taxi to the town area.  The taxis in Gyeongju is also quite small, so if you have 3 large luggage, they will likely ask you to take 2 taxis.

  • You can also take the intercity bus from Incheon Airport at platform 10C (See picture below).  The ride costs 37500 Won, duration is 5 hours, with departures at 7:00 am, 8:50 am, 1:40 pm, 5:40 pm, 7:30 pm, 9:30 pm.   The benefit of taking a bus is that it located in the city area, and you should be able to find accommodations nearby.

  • Bulkugsa Temple, Seokugram ( 1 day); Yangdong Village  + Gyeongju city tour( 1day).  Refer to the travel blogs below for details of the itinerary, or, click on the links in the interactive map above to access the details for each destination.

Gyeongju to Busan

  • The KTX from Singyeongju KTX station to Busan station takes only 20 minutes and costs 11000 won.  If you are staying near Busan Station, this would be the recommended option.

  • You can take a bus from Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal (Not Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal) to Busan at half the cost and double-triple the time, depending on traffic. (Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal to Busan Nopo-dong Terminal).  Frequency is around 30-40 minutes.  If you are the type who transfers between cities during the early hours or late afternoon/evening, then taking bus to Busan may not be a good option since there is a high chance you will get caught up in the city traffic jam.  Refer to blog on Gyeongju city tour for more details on getting around Gyeongju if you need more details on Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal.

  • There are many things to do at Busan. We suggest giving yourself 4 days to a week to explore Busan in detail. Suggested itinerary can be found in the Busan Album.

 1. Yandong Village

Gyeongju is a good base to visit the UNESCO sites: Yangdong Village , Bulguksa Temple and Seokgurum Grotto.  The fastest way to get to Gyeongju from Seoul is using the KTX from Seoul to Singyeongju Station (신경주역).  Singyeongju station is diferent station from the local train station (Gyeongju Station). A short cab ride will help connect you between Singyeongju station and the town are...

For some reason, Tongyeong doesn't seemed to received as much publicity by KTO compared to other cities.  But for those who are acquainted to the historical battles of Yi Sun Shin, the place holds much significance for Koreans, or even enyone who had studied about great wars against Japanese invasions.

I was only acquainted to Tongyeong because my favourite Korean variety show 2D1N has an episode to commemorate the achievements...
